Marshall Scholarships provide up to 40 Americans the opportunity to study in any field of study for a graduate degree in the United Kingdom for either one year or two years, with a few third year extensions available upon approval. Applicant assessments are based on academic merit, leadership potential and ambassadorial potential. The award includes university fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.

Description

The Marshall Scholarships honor the ideals of the Marshall Plan and are named after U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall. Applicants who have the potential to excel as scholars, leaders, and contributors to improved UK-US understanding are highly desired by Marshall Scholarships selectors. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at the graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study.

The five objectives of the Marshall Scholarships program are to: a.) enable intellectually distinguished young Americans, their country’s future leaders, to study for a graduate degree in the UK; b.) help Scholars gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain; c.) contribute to the advancement of knowledge in science, technology, the humanities and social sciences and the creative arts at Britain’s centers of academic excellence; d.) motivate Scholars to act as ambassadors from the USA to the UK and vice versa throughout their lives thus strengthening British and American understanding; and e.) promote the personal and academic fulfillment of each Scholar.
