Afrika Tikkun Program
When: June-July 2018 (exact dates to TBA)
Where: Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa
The UNC Global Social Development Innovations (GSDI) Center in the School of Social Work, in collaboration with the Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) at the University of Johannesburg will host UNC students for an immersion experience in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa. UNC students will have the opportunity to engage with Afrika Tikkun. Afrika Tikkun, located in Braamfontein, South Africa, is a nonprofit organization that employs a holistic developmental model and provides education, health and social services to underprivileged youth and their families in South Africa. Afrika Tikkun’s continuum of care model empowers young people to become responsible adults who will contribute to society. Its programs include early childhood development, training and career development for youth, family support services, access to primary health care, and food and nutrition security.
Yucatec Cenotes Program:
When: June 1-22, 2018
Where: Yucatán, Mexico near the colonial city of Valladolid
Requirement: Conversational Spanish
In the Cultural Heritage, Ecology, and Conservation of Yucatec Cenotes project, directed by InHerit at UNC and sponsored by the National Geographic Society, we collaborate with secondary school teachers in Yucatec Maya communities located in proximity to cenotes, students from the Universidad de Oriente in Valladolid, and researchers from the Great Maya Aquifer project in Yucatán, Mexico. Summer Investigators will help us achieve our goal to develop and implement innovative, experiential, and sustainable education programs and community activities that explore the cultural heritage, geomorphology, ecology, and oral history of cenotes as a key step toward promoting the conservation of these unique and vulnerable natural and cultural resources.
Global Studies will nominate finalists and final awards will be chosen by the UNC GSDI Center and InHerit at UNC in mid-late April.
