Description

The UNC-Chapel Hill Alumni Class of 1938 annually awards summer study abroad fellowships to U.S. students interested in pursuing independent career or personal projects outside the United States. This is a unique scholarship program because it provides financial assistance to students who could not perform independent projects abroad without the support of the Class of 1938 funding. Fellowships of $5000 each are awarded. The number and amount of the fellowships are subject to approval by the 1938 Endowment Committee board members.

All applicants are requested to meet with the Endowment Committee at the annual meeting in the Spring of 2017 held at UNC-Chapel Hill to give a brief verbal report of the previous summer’s activities. Applicants must be available in person at UNC-Chapel Hill for interviews on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 and Saturday, March 3, 2018, and the recipients will be expected to use the award during the summer for the purpose described in their project proposal.

The best candidates are those who indicate their interest in an independent study project that is tied to their personal and/or career aspirations and have financial need of scholarship funding to pursue this project. Motivation for research abroad as a learning experience and excitement about the project are also significant factors. Strong consideration will be given to candidates whose university records demonstrate their seriousness of academic purpose and to students who lack the sufficient funds to pursue the project. A project should be well thought out and researched as much as possible for feasibility and cost factors.
